Why do I need to have my gutters cleaned?
Gutters are designed to divert rainwater from your roof away from your home. When gutters become clogged with debris or when downspouts are blocked, they can no longer function properly. As a result, water may pool around your foundation or even seep under your house, potentially causing structural damage or basement flooding.
Clogged gutters can also lead to water damage on wood trim, siding, and other exterior surfaces. Investing a small amount in regular gutter cleaning and maintenance can prevent costly repairs down the line—helping to protect both your home and your wallet.
How often should I have my gutters cleaned?
The frequency of gutter cleaning depends largely on the types of trees around your property and how much debris they shed throughout the year. While many homeowners only require one or two cleanings annually, properties with heavy tree coverage may need more frequent maintenance. In addition to scheduled cleanings, we recommend periodic roof and gutter inspections to ensure proper function and prevent potential issues.
When should I have my gutters cleaned?
For the best protection, schedule gutter cleaning twice a year — late fall after the leaves drop, and late spring once pollen and seed pods are done falling.
These seasonal cleanings help prevent clogs right before the wettest times of year. If you’re already seeing overflow or drainage issues, don’t wait — cleaning your gutters now can prevent costly water damage to your home.
How do we clean the gutters?
We begin by hand-cleaning your gutters to remove all major debris, followed by a detailed finish using a leaf blower to clear any remaining material. Our process ensures your gutters are thoroughly cleaned with minimal disruption, delivering quality results efficiently and at a fair price.
How messy is gutter cleaning?
Gutter cleaning can be a messy process, and while it is not possible to complete the work entirely mess-free, we take great care to be as tidy as possible. Our team will make every reasonable effort to clean up after the job is done, leaving your home and property in the same condition we found it—or better.
How do you clear the down-spouts?
Identifying a clogged downspout is typically straightforward. In most cases, the blockage can be resolved by removing debris from the top of the downspout or by clearing the elbow joint located just below the gutter connection. After the obstruction is removed, we verify the downspout is fully clear by blowing air through it with a leaf blower. If any doubt remains, we perform an additional test by dropping a small object, such as a coin, to ensure it reaches the bottom.
Why do gutters need to be tightened?
Gutter nails can slowly work themselves loose from the fascia board, causing gutters to sag or pull away from the house. This allows water to run behind the gutter instead of into it, and in severe cases, the gutter may even fall due to the weight of rainwater. Regularly tightening gutter nails helps keep your gutter system secure and working properly.
My gutters have screens on them, do they need to be cleaned and can you clean them?
Even with gutter screens installed, it’s still important to have your gutters cleaned at least once a year. Debris can accumulate underneath the screens over time, and an annual inspection also provides an opportunity to spot potential roofing or drainage issues before they become costly repairs.
When cleaning gutters with screens, we carefully lift one end of the screen, use a leaf blower to move all debris toward that opening, and remove it from that location. Once the gutters are clear, we securely replace the screen at the end where it was removed.
There is water coming from behind my gutters, can this be fixed?
This issue is most often caused by a loose gutter, which can typically be resolved by tightening the gutter nails — a service included in our standard package. Another common cause is a clogged downspout; in this case, water may back up and overflow behind the gutter. Cleaning the gutters and downspouts will usually correct the problem.
In some situations, however, the issue may not be related to loose gutters. For example, if the fascia board is rotting or the first course of shingles does not extend far enough over the gutter, tightening the gutter will not resolve the problem. These cases may require additional repair work.
Do you recommend gutter protection systems or screens?
At best, gutter protection systems—including screens—can reduce maintenance, but they do not eliminate it entirely.
